5160 steel is a high-carbon chromium alloy spring steel known for its excellent toughness, shock resistance, and fatigue strength. Containing about 0.6% carbon and around 0.8% chromium, it hardens well and is commonly used for leaf springs, large knives, swords, and impact tools. While it offers good edge retention and durability when properly heat treated, it is not stainless and requires maintenance to prevent rust.
